Did someone say roadtrip?

April 7 , 2007

Once upon a time...

I dreamed of driving across country once in my life. Yes, this year the road trip is the time to do it. I’m moving and I thought I’d take the VW Beetle and drive cross country.  Another thing to check off the lifetime to do list. If there are suggestions for things like the biggest ball of twine (which I’m sad to say is way out off route and isn’t going to happen) I’d love to hear from you.  I’m planning on taking the southern part of the USA. Keep in mind we’re driving from DC to San Francisco in less than a week.

The destination idea list so far...

  • Graceland, TN: ‘Cause you just have to! Who doesn’t love Elvis?
  • Roswell, NM: Area 51
  • Las Vegas, NV: I’ve been already but thought it would be fun to drive in and my co-pilot hasn’t been there. Plus I think I might have to try fried twinkies this time at Mermaid’s Casino (who btw doesn’t have a their own website).
  • Grand Canyon, NV: I’ve never been and I want to try the Skywalk
  • Rocky Mountain, CO: Rocky Mountain Park

A few ideas:

Cahokia Ruins - outside St. Louis in Illinois - the world’s largest archaeological site, a native american city arguably as large as Paris in the 16th century.

Manitou Cliff Dwellings - Colorado - awesome native american cliff dwellings, and right near Pike’s Peak if I recall correctly

Four Corners - the collective border of UT, CO, AZ, and NM - I’m sure there could be some hilarious Cindy Li photos from the spot where the borders all meet.

Biosphere 2 - Outside Tuscon - Test out Garber’s Pauly Shore impression

Meteor Crater - Outside of Flagstaff, AZ - If you want to go look at a big hole in the ground. :)

Kelli, I think you are braver. I’m taking one of my best friends with me.

Dunno if you’re going along route 66 or not; there’s lots of fun kitsch stuff along there. I’ve always found the Roadside America site really handy for planning trips like this - I have a photo gallery of “giant things” (strawberries, cows, muffler men, etc.) that I’ve collected on numerous trips like this over the years.

About

I'm living in San Francisco, Ca and partnered with the guys at Nclud. Constantly, trying to learn new things, and on the way I get to meet some amazing people with my camera by my side. XOXO!
