Farewell to Jessica

August 19 , 2006

Once upon a time

There was a beautiful Catholic girl who decided to take up a swing dancing class. She met a few good people that way and I was one of those people who have had the pleasure of knowing Jessica. She became one of my closest friends and I am sad to see her go. Jess is one of the sweetest girls I know and I thank God she exists.  It didn’t take much convincing but since she is moving away next weekend I got her to do a swing dance jam at the local dance venue.  Jessica you will be missed! And now presenting the video…

Wow! Awesome dancing!

How hard was it to learn swing dancing?

It’s always going to take guys longer to learn swing dancing than the women since you have to be the one to elead the next move. It wasn’t that hard for me but I’m a girl. I’ve been trying to learn how to lead that takes a lot more effort. I started dancing in 1999 (off and on since then).

I am always interested in taking some dancing classes. Do you mind if I pick on your brain? :) What about rhythm? Does one have to listen or follow a certain rhythm of a music when dancing? And what kind of music was played in the video? (Gotta ask because of my deafness.:)

No, I don’t mind.
There was one guy from NY that I know of that took dance classes. It was slightly difficult but he could feel the beat. The music that was played was mid tempo. Can you feel music through vibrations through the floor?

Yes, I can although I do have some residual hearing. Not perfect.

Wouldn’t it be easier to memorize the steps or sequence of movements? Or would there be some kind of step counts involved or some other variation(s) out there?

Some basic steps, yes but it depends on the tempo of the music and if you wanted to do something with the break in the music.  For social dancing its fine. I think for basic dancing its worth a shot. I don’t know if you wanted to compete. :)

Hey, you never know! :)

Did you ever learn any other types of dancing, like salsa? And one might be wondering what would be the hardest dancing to learn or master?

I think its mostly frame (tension ) and rhythm. The frame is important but be careful you don’t have too much then you can hurt the girl. Maybe take a private lesson. I think if you are commited to it anything is possible :)

I did take salsa but I was disturbed by the aggressiveness of the men that danced it.

About

I'm living in San Francisco, Ca and partnered with the guys at Nclud. Constantly, trying to learn new things, and on the way I get to meet some amazing people with my camera by my side. XOXO!
