MacBook Pro: How to install memory

December 4 , 2006

Once upon a time

We got 2 G memory sticks for the MacBook Pro on the work computer. I only had 1G prior to that. I quickly ran and got my tools out!

What you need

  • The memory/RAM you ordered
  • eyeglass philips screwdriver or a 1.4mm screwdriver

Let's get started

1. Flip the laptop over and remove the battery.

2. Locate the three screws that you will need to remove. (Click on the image below. Roll over the image for the location of the screws if you can't locate them a message will popup)

3. Remove the three screws out to the side and be careful the screws disappear easily. Lift the lid toward you and lift up.(Click on the image below. Roll over to see where you should touch to ground yourself. Static electricity is your enemy.) Note: You want to ground yourself before you touch the memory

4. Remove the lid and you will see the memory.

Did I mention? I'm saying this twice because it is VERY important you do that or you wil mess up the memory you just purchased.(Click on the image below. Roll over to see where you should touch to ground yourself. Static electricity is your enemy.) Note: You want to ground yourself before you touch the memory.

5. There are two rows for the memory if you have 2 cards in there you will see what I mean. There are two clips (metal) at each side. Push the clips away from the memory. (Click on the image if you are not sure what the clips look like. )Then pull the memory at about 30degrees. Gently pull at an angle and remove the memory.

6. Now that you have the old ones out. You want to install the new ones. You put it in at an angle about 30degrees. Note there is a notch on one side of the memory and there is no way of putting it wrong.
