Podcasting: Two podcasts (Dave Shea, Veerle Pieters, and Molly Holzschlag)

July 17 , 2006

Podcasting...

I’ve been trying to figure out the proper solution for podcasting and posting since I volunteered myself to do a presentation at July’s Refresh DC, Tuesday, July 25th, at The National Digital Library Learning Center (map of the building), Library of Congress, Madison Building (1st Floor), 101 Independence Ave SE, Washington, DC 20003 (directions).

Also staring: Jason Garber, our Refresh DC fearless leader.  He’s going to present more about the technical aspects and I figure I can do the more practical part. I’m nervous since I hate public speaking and no one will believe I’m actually shy. :P Can’t sit on the sidelines forever.

I was hoping for some time to create a new section on my site to link this to but .Mac made it too easy for me to complete this until I decide that I want it as a permanent link and I have more time too many projects going on right now, (insert sigh here for more hours in a day).

Announcing two podcasts

The first and possibly only, two podcasts unedited, very candid conversations.

  • The first interview: Dave Shea, and Veerle Pieters about CSS designs being stolen and how they felt.
  • The second interview: Molly Holzschlag about privacy on the web.

  • The podcast

Here's the URL to the podcast playground.

    Things I considered

    • I thought about using the various places to host the site and some of them I worried would own the content and copyrights, Odeo
    • Then there is the issue of bandwidth (not sure how many people are actually going to listen to the podcasts)... my .mac account has a limit to download
    • Could use my cindyli.com host Cafaro Tech, with a limit of 40g each month
    • Should I type it or have a transcript for those of you not wanting to listen?" -- what about deaf people? Or search engines? Such as Casting Words, where you can buy a transcript of your podcast.
    • I could use my .mac account (plus I have it already so why not use it) and just publish it 1-2-3 using Garage Band instantaneously (man they made it too easy) for a WYSIWYG aka picture person like me

    In the end

.Mac account won out for now for ease of use and publishing til I figure out if podcasting is something I want to continue :)

Hi hello,
Take a look and listen at PodCheckReview.com for occassional ideas on planning and producing podcasts.

Transcripts are a tricky issue. You can do it yourself (takes for ever!) or hire a company like DataLyst www.datalystcorp.com to do it for you. Not sure about the costs.

Hosting - take a look at for example www.libsyn.com (haven’t tried them myself). Someone mentioned that LaughingSquid.net are hosting podcasts, not sure if that’s correct or not.

Another two cents…
When my company’s clients ask about podcasting we usually start out by talking about two things: 1) the purpose of the podcast, and 2) what experince, if any, the host and/or producer have of what is basically broadcasting.

These two points are kinda’ boring and less action oriented. But they are so incredibly important in order to build an audience and deliver a quality podcast. On the other hand if someone’s only doing the ‘cast to entertain friends anything goes :)

/J (who might be able to make it to Refresh DC tomorrow)
