The Adventures of Cindy Li
Post SXSW
March 31 , 2006
Sorry guys,
I haven’t had time to post as much as I wanted. I am trying to keep up with all the friends I’ve missed while being in the Geek Woodstock (you know, SXSWi). I can’t begin to tell you all the wonderful things that have happened since coming back. I have been senior graphic designer for a while now and on the side I like reading/testing out gadgets and how technology better serves our everyday lives.
My boss comes over to speak w/me on the thursday post sxsw
And asks about the conference (that I sent myself to and took vacation time for). She tells me about a new project that we want to work on, styleguide for the company. I send her some links that I gathered from the conference and another project about sharing
Grassroots baby!
So now I’ve landed myself into this new position and the boss up in NY is pleased. Web standards?? Sounds familiar…:) Yipee! Plus I did some extra designs for another group in my spare time (things like while waiting in the airport) and that project will come out soon I hope and I’ll share then. That group sends an email saying they love my work and want me to do more (I need more hours in a day). Plus, I get a thank you from the marketing group (has never happened before). The boss up in NY asks me to do a presentation for the entire team for NY and Dulles on the video conferencing (gulp..) I said well, do I get my vacation back? ::crossing fingers:: He agrees. I was hoping they would pay for @media or web essentials but alas.. no dice.
So now its back to saving money
And eating peanut butter and jelly so I can go ;) So between all this Veerle and Geert were visiting and we were causing up a storm just geeking out at my house with design speak and geek speak. Since I’m paying for it I’m making a vacation of it. I’m going to see Veerle and Geert in Belgium (almost 2 weeks including @media). We’re going to go to Paris.. and goodness, I am going to go to the top of the Eiffel tower this time.
All this because…
In 2005 I helped Elsa Kawai. I wasn’t very inspired by any of the stuff we were doing and she said, “Hey, I’ve got an idea why don’t you come with me to SXSW. I have an extra ticket.” Elsa’s website was in the competition and work was paying for her. So all I had to do was pay for the plane and food. Cool! So Elsa’s a chatty one and she spoke to the speakers and I was in tow. The rest is history. Weird how good karma can work out and paying it forward does work.On April 22….
I’ve got a show Richmond Craft Bada Bing with one of my partner in crime ;) Leah Koentoph. We make fused glass jewelry, our little company fusedCandy. So many things… plus redesigning cindyli.com (its currently a .mac account masked :P) I’m working on doing the CSS .. still in progress on the design. Did I leave anything out? Hmm… I know.. my knee is better and I’m walking around sans cane and brace. Which is good cause swing dancing is next weekend DCLX! (DC lindy Exchange, people come from all over the place to go swing dancing. I did the tshirt design that they are selling) Which is what cause the knee injury so I’m taking it easy by sitting on my bum and designing instead of dancing much to the dismay of my friends. Can you tell I had coffee?
