Refresh 2006 Conference: Mike Girouard

November 16 , 2006

It’s more than just markup

Mike Girouard

Why are you here?

To learn?
(web) encompasses a couple of problems with this.
Start with the people is we get tunnel vision

The problem with the web (it’s divergent) (its complex) (its volatile)

client side code
design
seo
usability
accessibility
server-side code
SEM
system administration
content editors

The past:

how many times has the web evolved since you have been in it?
think about how content gets on the web
now there is more purpose to the web
“best viewed with”

The present

Think about the technology we are embracing
XML
Think about the technology. We are starting to trust it again.
device independent
the platform
web 2.0

let’s look at what we are doing.
are we doing it right?
One word is that we are starting to embrace standards
Even though standards since the late 90s…

Is it a technology? XHTML?

CSS
JavaScript
FlashWeb
PHP
ASP
Cold Fusion
PERL

What is the web?

Web noun: “one huge community of ideas… a collection is stagnant. A community evolves."–aaron
Web noun “Porn"–Dennis Hart, Print designer
Btw: the web is only 1% Porn
Slashdot article Web 1% Porn

Closing thoughts:

a wonderful place where code, color, creativity can exist. There is one hell of a community that is going to back it up. Those of the people steering the masses.
Every single time you upload a file and launch a website completely you added another dimension that didn’t exist before.

About

I'm living in San Francisco, Ca and partnered with the guys at Nclud. Constantly, trying to learn new things, and on the way I get to meet some amazing people with my camera by my side. XOXO!
