What just happened?

SXSW interactive speakers page with hCard markup
hCard to vCard convertor
everyone has a phone they have a hcard you can sync it with your pda/handheld
makes contact information a lot more useful.

hCard markup example

(check the url)
Reuse them as class names for the hMicro-formatscard
given name, family name, title, org,

More than just “good class names

Micro-formats process:

  • 1. pick a specific, simple problem and define it
  • 2. research and document current web publishing behavior say you wanted it for “widgets” if you can’t find content for widgets.. maybe there isn’t a need….
  • 3. document existing formats in the problem area try not to create a new format to control and contain formats don’t invent new terminology
  • 4. brainstorm with implied schema/reuse names
  • 5. iterate within the community, try publishing on the internet and get comments and get more change.. evolving

Micro-formats 2004-05

  • XFN-distributed social network, blog, wordPress, rubhub and more
  • re-license-license links
  • cc creator, yahoo cc search, google search
  • xoxo-lists and outlines
  • wordpress, technorati, more…
  • vote links…
  • hCalendar…

How do you create more micro-formats?

IRC
irc.freenode.net#micro-formats
great place to lurk and learn…

Create your own hCard

  • use the hCard creator

Why I got exacted about Microformats:

Mark Norman Francis:Yahoo! UK
two basic reasons…lazy, and two I’m impatient
I don’t want to code it twice, too much time, within the company we did an informal talk about micro-formats and decided we would try it out on a site to see how it went.
ukmovies.yahoo.com/s/Serenity/review-41366.html
If you see the icon on the bottom right,  the two reviews are there
Other yahoo properties used microformats

Jeremy Keith…

Using upcoming.org,  geo coordinates didn’t show up,looked on the sxsw website but they aren’t marked up in hcalendar
The idea is that there were cutting and pasting got together a list of things I wanted to do
hcalendar.

Start time of event, the end time. I wanted the geo information. Yahoo has a geo code/api
marked up the hcalendar austin.adactio.com/before.php
Check google and get the api mixed in w/his page and got the same page but w/some extra script tags
austin.adactio.com

You can grab hcards

link to technorati and it will download the ical
then i can sync it up w/the ipod and everything else
ical could be better w/the time zone setting because it messes up (he created this in england) so it was setup properly once in central time

xoxo-if you have cool scripts do it on this page

How we see the web
as an event
as a database
it’s simple
Lucene (full-text search engine) + Creative commons (micro-formats) x API (web services & feeds)

Think about it we can index all these things

  • what we can do now
  • blog posts w/links to people
  • lists of people and their blog
  • your contact info and favorite places
  • concert and movie reviews (etc)upcoming events
  • parties and booze@sxsw

upcoming.org
